Then and Now : Barbarella’s Birmingham

Barbarella’s night club was my second home in 1977-78, and I saw many great bands there. I wish I’d kept a record of which ones. It’s a bit hazy now, but definitely The Clash, Radio Stars, Wayne County & The Electric Chairs, and many other punk bands. I missed the Sex Pistols, AC/DC, Blondie and Dire Straits as I was living in Yorkshire at the time, for a year.

Great nights at Barbarella’s. Getting home at 3am via the late night chip shop and up for work 4 hours later. Those were the days.

I went to both the Barbarellas and Bogarts gigs.My and my brother Alan got insipred by them and ended up forming the Prefects after seeing these shows. Barbarellas was a great gig and like nothing we had seen before, the Pistols were great. I would love to get a copy of this gig if anyones got one. If you listen to the Bogarts tape you can hear me and my bro shouting out to slow down between a couple of songs! We were at the front ( which wasn`t far from being at the back as I don`t remember too many people there. The band turned up late about 9ish and carried their gear in , set it up and played almost immediately ( no sign of any contrived swindle bullshit that Malcolm lated tried to make out) Just a band that wanted to play. I have access to some photos from both Brum gigs, a mate of mine took some and I have some copies. Seeing the Pistols before the Grundy thing happened and it exploded was a really memorable experience and having seem them later when Sid had joined, the earlier gigs were so much better in comparison.

Yes, they were great days. In fact, coincidentally I opened up a business in New Street, Birmingham way back in 1986 and when the lease expired I moved the business to the same building that years before had been occupied by Bogart’s. I’m still waiting for someone to invent a time machine so I can go back to the 70’s and live it all again. I’d make sure I saw as many bands as possible, especially those that went on to become really successful. I missed out on seeing the Sex Pistols, Dire Straits, Blondie, The Police etc.
